Two hours north of Boston is Portland, the capital of the state of Maine, known for its food scene and beer production. You can wander the cobbled streets of the Old Port and visit its shops and art galleries. For food, head to J’s Oyster, an old-school spot where you can enjoy a good lobster and other seafood. At Eventide, a much more modern restaurant, the array of oysters that greet you as you walk in will leave you wanting to come back. From Portland you can take a ferry to one of the islands in Casco Bay, such as Peaks Island, where, just 15 minutes from the city, time seems to slow down.
