Santa Catalina Island is a rocky island off the coast of Southern California in the Gulf of Santa Catalina. Commonly called Catalina Island or simply Catalina, it is the easternmost of California’s Channel Islands and lies within Los Angeles County. The island’s highest point is Mount Orizaba (2,097 ft / 639 m). Catalina is the starting point for the Catalina Channel swim, one of the three swims in the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming, along with the English Channel and the circumnavigation of Manhattan Island. In 1927, 17-year-old Canadian swimmer George Young became the first person to swim from Catalina Island to mainland California, finishing in 15 hours, 44 minutes, and 30 seconds. Since then, over 500 swimmers have completed the 20.1‑mile crossing from Doctor’s Cove on Catalina to the mainland near Point Vicente Lighthouse and Rancho Palos Verdes. Because Catalina Island was never connected to mainland California, it originally lacked terrestrial life; plants and animals that colonized the island had to cross open ocean by wind, water, or flight. Beginning with Native Americans and continuing into the present, humans have also introduced species, both intentionally and accidentally. Catalina now supports at least fifty endemic species and subspecies that occur naturally only on the island and nowhere else in the world.

Mazatlán is a coastal city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa and the seat of the Mazatlán Municipality. It lies on the Pacific Ocean at 23°13′N 106°25′W, across from the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The name Mazatlán comes from Nahuatl and means “place of deer.” The city was founded in 1531 by Spaniards and Indigenous settlers. In the mid-19th century, many German immigrants arrived and, together with local residents, helped develop Mazatlán into a major commercial seaport that supplied equipment to nearby gold and silver mines. Mazatlán was the capital of Sinaloa from 1859 to 1873. German influence can still be seen in the region’s banda music, which incorporates elements of Bavarian folk music, and in local industry; the Pacifico Brewery was founded here on March 14, 1900.
